Ann’s Story at Queens View Harbour Care Home

Ann moved to Queens View Harbour Care Home following a fracture which affected her ability to remain safely at home. Following her accident, she experienced periods of confusion which made day-to-day life more difficult and increased concerns around her safety.

Like many people adjusting to life in a care home, Ann initially found the transition emotional and frustrating. A fiercely independent and sociable lady, she missed being able to freely go out shopping, enjoy walks outdoors, and continue the active lifestyle she had always loved.

Our team quickly recognised that supporting Ann meant far more than simply providing care. It meant understanding what mattered most to her as a person.

Supporting Independence Through Meaningful Experiences

Rather than focusing on limitations, our team worked creatively and proactively to help Ann continue enjoying the activities and routines that brought her happiness and confidence.

Because it was no longer safe for Ann to go out independently, staff members and befrienders began accompanying her on outings into the local community. These trips allowed Ann to continue doing the things she loved while remaining safe and supported.

Ann now regularly attends tea dances at Troon Town Hall and visits CentreStage in Kilmarnock each week. She also enjoys shopping trips, visits to local garden centres, and outings into the community to support local charities and shops. Taking part in the home’s walking group has also allowed Ann to continue enjoying the outdoors and socialising with others.

These experiences have helped Ann remain socially connected, active, and engaged with the community around her.

Reconnecting With Her Love of Music

Music has always played a huge role in Ann’s life, and maintaining that connection became an important part of her wellbeing journey.

Working closely with Ann’s family, the team arranged for a keyboard to be placed in her room so she could continue playing music privately and comfortably within her own space. Ann also now enjoys weekly piano lessons every Friday with her music teacher, Aimee.

These sessions have become a treasured part of her routine and have helped restore a sense of familiarity, enjoyment, and confidence.

Growing in Confidence

Over time, the positive changes in Ann have been remarkable. With regular social interaction, meaningful activities, continued independence, and emotional support, Ann has gradually returned to her lively and outgoing self. Her confidence has grown, her anxiety has reduced significantly, and her speech has noticeably improved.

She now finds it easier to “find her words,” which has helped ease much of the frustration she initially experienced following her accident.

Ann has even gone on to lead an exercise class for fellow residents, something that reflects both her personality and the renewed confidence she has gained since moving into Queens View Harbour Care Home.

Staying Connected With Family

Maintaining strong family connections has also remained an important part of Ann’s life. She continues to enjoy regular visits and outings with her loved ones, helping her maintain the relationships and routines that mean so much to her.

At Queens View Harbour Care Home, we understand how important these relationships are, and we always encourage families to remain closely involved in daily life and special moments.

A Personal Approach to Care

Reflecting on Ann’s journey, one member of staff shared:

“Seeing Ann so comfortable in her home is so lovely. She has changed from the person she was when she came here. She is more confident and relaxed and truly comfortable in her environment.”

Another staff member added:

“What we found to be most important was our team finding creative, proactive ways to support her to do the things she enjoyed.”

Ann’s story is a wonderful example of how person-centred care can positively impact wellbeing, confidence, and quality of life. By focusing on the individual and the things that truly matter to them, care can become about living well, not simply receiving support.

At Queens View Harbour Care Home in Troon, we are proud to create a warm and supportive environment where residents are encouraged to continue enjoying the hobbies, routines, and connections that make them who they are.
